Short answerCPaaS — Communications Platform as a Service — is a provider that gives you one API for sending messages, and maintains the connections to mobile operators and channel owners behind it. Instead of negotiating separately with hundreds of networks and with Meta, Viber and Telegram, you integrate once.
Not the API. An HTTP endpoint that accepts a message is a weekend of work. What you are buying is everything behind it: the operator agreements, the routing decisions, the sender ID filings, the template approvals, the delivery reporting and the compliance work for every market you send to.
That is also why CPaaS providers differ so much in delivery rate while looking identical in their documentation.
| What it is | Who uses it | |
|---|---|---|
| CPaaS | Building blocks — an API your software calls to send messages or make calls | Developers, embedded in your own product |
| UCaaS | A finished communications suite — phone, video, chat for staff | Employees, as a workplace tool |
| CCaaS | A contact-centre platform — queues, routing, agent desktops | Support and sales agents |
If you need a tool your staff log into rather than something your product calls, you want UCaaS or CCaaS instead. CPaaS assumes there is software on your side making the request.
It is also the wrong shape for very low volumes in a single country, where a simple bulk-SMS web tool is cheaper and needs no engineering at all.
Ritorica is a CPaaS covering SMS, WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, push and email on one API.
