Short answerA2P stands for application-to-person: a message sent to someone by software rather than typed by a human. Order confirmations, delivery alerts, appointment reminders, one-time passcodes and marketing campaigns are all A2P. It uses the same networks as an ordinary text but is sent through a provider API.
P2P — person-to-person — is you texting a friend. A2P is a system texting a customer. The handset shows both the same way, but the networks treat them as different products.
The distinction is commercial and regulatory, not technical. Operators charge A2P traffic differently, filter it more aggressively, and in most countries require the sender to register before any of it will pass.
Because it determines the price, the route and whether the message is legal. Sending marketing content through a transactional route is the most common cause of an account being suspended, and operators do inspect content.
Declaring the category honestly is not a formality. Misdeclared traffic gets filtered silently — the message is accepted, billed, and never delivered.
Ritorica delivered over 12 billion A2P messages in 2025.
